When it comes to stocking up on unique gifts and sampling delectable treats, there’s little that gets us in the festive spirit more than a Christmas market. While they may be a German tradition, every winter, more and more fairy-light-festooned fairs are popping up around the country.

Bath Christmas Market is one of the prettiest, with more than 170 wooden chalets clustered together in the area surrounding the floodlit abbey (23 November to 10 December). Alternatively, Manchester boasts 10 different festive markets around the city centre, with gifts and glühwein in more than 300 twinkly chalets (10 November to 20 December).

The Wintertime Market at London’s Southbank Centre is a chance to up your shopping ante with stylish artisan gifts, plus festive treats and tipples (1 December to 2 January). In Glasgow, you’ll find plenty of Christmas cheer in St Enoch Square, along with some live entertainment and the chance to bag a few unique stocking-fillers (10 November to 22 December).

Belfast Christmas Market serves up international cuisine in the grounds of the spectacular City Hall (18 November to 19 December). And Bury St Edmunds hosts a colourful Yuletide market, with fairground rides, music, fireworks and a lantern parade (23-26 November).
