The Ultimate Winter Skin Care Guide!

Winter and its harsh temperatures can drastically affect the condition and appearance of our skin leading it to become dry, flaky, raw and often irritated. Thankfully, Dr Rupert Critchley - Founder & Director at VIVA Skin Clinics is on hand to give some expert advice on how to keep skin in tip-top condition throughout the season.

1. Winter Skin Saviours

Skin hydration is especially important for those who suffer from dry skinand emollients are often a good first line of call. Emollients are moisturising treatments applied directly to the skin to soothe and hydrate it and cover skin with a protective film to trap in moisture and help the repair itself. Just as you change your wardrobe in winter, the same should apply for your skincare. Throughoutthe colder months, ensure that you are using a richer, more hydrating moisturiser, as opposed to the lighter formulations we often use during summer.

2. SPF!

People are often less mindful of sun protection in the cold weather but don’t let this fool you! The sun’s rays are just as harmful despite an overcast, wet or windy forecast. Therefore, make sure to use a daily SPF 50 to prevent the harmful effects of the rays and protect your skin from the elements year-round.

3. Beauty Treatments

Throughout winter the cold winds and freezing temperatures draw out moisture, leaving skin sensitive, dry, and dehydrated. In order to try and counteract these negative effects, gentle in-salon facials can help to restore the skins lost moisture and hydration as well as aiding to lock in nutrients. Look for gentle moisturising facials and try to avoid microdermabrasion, steaming and harsh extractions.

4. DIY Beauty

At home face masks are also a great beauty tool to use throughout the colder climate. They can provide instant gratification for a multitude of different skin concerns including dry and flaky skin which is so prevalent throughout winter. Moisturising masks are occlusive which means that they blanket the skin and help to lock in nutrients in order to plump, hydrate and balance the skin.

5. Diet

A balanced diet full of nutrient rich leafy green vegetables and superfoods can help to improve skins texture, tone and general complexion throughout the winter season. Reducing your intake of oils, refined sugars and processed foods can also help with general skin health.
