Craft Along: Pom-poms

To start our “craft along” series, we’re going to make something super simple, fun and using items that a lot of you will already have lying around the house: we’re crafting pom-poms! The possibilities are endless once you get the hang of it and there are so may crafty uses for these fluffy delights – you can use them as present toppers, in card making, for decorations and strung together as garlands to name just a few. All you’ll need is leftover wool, some cardboard and some sharp scissors.

Step 1

Cut two identical “donut” shapes out of your cardboard – the size of these will determine how big your finished pom-pom will be. We used a glass to draw around for the larger circle and a coin for the smaller one. Cut a slit in one side, this will make the next step much easier! These don’t need to be perfect: as you can see, ours aren’t!

Step 2

Place your cardboard discs together, back to back, with the slit matching up on both. Choose your wool and, keeping the strands together if using multiple colours, wrap around your cardboard discs. You can use just one colour or multiple colours as we have done in the photograph. The thicker you wrap your wool – the fluffier your finished pom-pom will be! Ideally you should keep wrapping until the hole in the middle of your cardboard almost disappears.

Step 3

Once you have finished wrapping, you should start cutting the wool all around the edge, by placing your scissors between the 2 cardboard discs. This can be a little bit fiddly but using sharp scissors really helps!

Step 4

Once you have cut all the way around your circle, cut a length of wool and place this between the 2 cardboard discs, tying as tight as you can!

Step 5

Remove the cardboard discs, these should slide out with a bit of a wiggle! Fluff up your pom-pom and trim off any bits of wool that stick out! You can leave the ends of the wool you used to tie your pom-pom long, to allow you to hang or tie to something!

Step 6

Experiment with different colour combinations and different sized discs! There are so many possibilities and they get much easier the more you make!
